A Class VIII hull at full thrust, its whole rear engine bank lit blue-white, dust lanes behind it

VOIDYARD: You build the ship. Every part of it.

When can I play?

Start in a small escape pod. Mine asteroids for ore, build modules onto your hull, and salvage the ships you defeat, until the pod is a warship.

How it plays.

Five steps from one pod to a warship. Every part pictured is a module from the game.

Step 1: Start with the pod.

You begin as one small escape pod in procedurally generated space. Mine asteroids for ore and salvage parts from the ships you defeat.

Step 2: Bolt on modules anywhere they touch.

Open Build mode anywhere in space and place modules in open slots next to your hull. No tech tree decides your shape and no recipe decides your layout. A heavier ship turns more slowly, and more guns need more reactors.

  • Mirror a whole arm across the hull.
  • Sweep to paint a run of armor in one stroke.
  • Draw a ship in the Ship Designer and share it as a short text code.

Step 3: Your ship is the progress bar.

Earn blueprints to upgrade modules through ten classes, and spend skill points across three skill trees. Step through ten example ships, from a starting pod to a Class X warship.

In Normal mode, your skills and salvaged boosters survive a wreck. In Ironman, a core breach ends the save.

Step 4: Take their ship apart. Keep yours together.

CautionAnything you bolt on can be shot back off. Guard the core at the center or lose everything bolted to it.

Shots damage individual modules. Destroy the connections holding a section on and the whole section drifts away, guns and all. Enemy hulls follow the same rules, so where you aim matters as much as what you fire.

Damage types
Kineticstrips shields
Explosivecracks armor and spreads into the squares around it
Beamdeals extra damage to guns and reactors

A whole side gone. The modules holding it on broke first.

Step 5: The bigger you get, the louder you get.

A larger ship draws more attention. When the Foundry, the force behind the hostile ships, sends a hunting party, you get 18 seconds of warning. Some hunters even copy your ship.

Attention

  1. UNNOTICEDdrifting quiet
  2. NOTICEDa Stalker turns
  3. HUNTEDa hunting party is inbound
  4. MARKEDthey have your shape

Three ways out

  1. Stand and fight the hunting party.
  2. Kill the Stalker that found you and the party loses you.
  3. Stay beyond their pursuit range for 45 seconds.
